Now in its 14th year of celebrating advertising excellence in the digital media and marketing industry, the IAB South Africa Bookmark Awards are set to unveil their 2022 Judging Chairs.
This year’s awards aim to take on the IAB’s top priorities, including putting users first, creating and sustaining a cohesive approach to measurement, transforming the industry from the inside out, and delivering trusted digital supply chains. . At the heart of this transformation is the recognition of work that inspires and educates the industry while producing measurable results. And the key to it all? The experts who preside over the incredible nominations submitted every year.
Meet the jury presidents
The 2022 Jury Chairs will lead eight award categories that align with IAB South Africa’s mandate to enable the media and marketing industry to thrive in the digital economy. To drive the industry forward, the Publishing category now includes more aspects aligned with IAB SA’s core focus areas of advertising, marketing and related digital publishing.
Leading the bookmark categories during this year’s evaluation process are:
Marketing: Kabelo Moshapalo, Creative Director, Ogilvy Johannesburg
Digital native and self-taught illustrator Kabelo Moshapalo swapped his acrylic paints for a digital canvas – and hasn’t looked back. With over 20 years of experience in advertising and digital interactivity, he has led key digital transformation (DX) initiatives throughout his career. This, along with his award-winning work at major publicity festivals such as Cannes Lions, ADC New York, The One Show and many more, has earned him a spot on destiny man‘s 2015 Power of 40 List, which celebrates extraordinary men under 40 from across the country. Moshapalo is also a member of the executive committee of the Creative Circle, an industry leading body for advertising creativity in South Africa and has been named to the Creative Circle forum which aims to elevate the level of creativity and innovation across brands and agencies, called AB InBev Braintrust, in 2020 and 2021.
Publisher: Lebogang Boshomane, SowetanLIVE Online Publisher, Arena Holdings
Lebogang Boshomane is the digital editor of sowetan the newspaper’s digital platform. With over 10 years of experience producing online content, her responsibilities include editing and managing content across SowetanLIVE’s channels, where she helped grow the platform’s footprint to over 3.5 million unique browsers as well as running successful campaigns such as Mzansi’s Sexiest and The Black Edition of Sowetan. Boshomane holds an internationally accredited qualification in Digital Marketing from the Brand School and in 2018 was selected for WAN-IFRA’s Strengthening Media and Society capacity building programme. She also participated in an exchange program where she visited leading publications post office and Amedia in Oslo, Norway.
Performance Marketing: Audrey Naidoo, Digital Marketing Manager, ABSA
Audrey Naidoo wears many hats including modern marketer, digital marketer, podcaster, influencer, speaker and member of various professional bodies such as IAB Brand Council, Mobile Marketing Association , the Marketing Association of South Africa and the Chief Marketing Officer Advisory Council for Africa. Naidoo’s podcast, LetsTalkDigital, aims to educate and open up digital conversations within the industry while her extensive experience in the broader digital ecosystem merges business interests and strategy with data, analytics and research. digital marketing transformation to achieve superior results in an ever-changing marketing industry.
Social, Community and Influencer Marketing: Zahira Kharsany, Head of Social and Digital Strategy, Gorilla
Zahira Kharsany is a social media enthusiast who began her career – and eventual love affair – with digital media in Courier and Custodian In line. With 13 years working for agencies, as well as a background in media, her background spans web, print and marketing. Besides being Gorilla’s chief digital strategist, Kharsany is a writer, blogger, tech junkie, and ardent sports fan who can be found on most social media platforms. Online is where her true passions manifest, as she has a keen interest in how people consume and use social and digital media on a daily basis.
Builders: Jessica van der Westhuyzen, Digital Marketing Specialist, 10X Investments
Jessica van der Westhuyzen has spent the last 13 years of his career leading teams and companies in digital strategy and transformation, and adoption of MarTech platforms. She is passionate about data, the story it tells and uses it to influence user experiences and drive customer journeys. Having been a member of the Bookmarks Builders panel for the past four years, this will be van der Westhuyzen’s first as panel chair.
Innovative Engineers: Walter Madzonga, Digital Strategy and Innovation Program Manager, ShopriteX
An engine of change who strives for excellence, Walter Madzonga has been passionate about and involved in innovation and strategy in multiple sectors since obtaining his degree in electrical engineering. After supporting various companies in their digital transformation programs in the telecom, media and FMCG sectors, he now works in the retail sector for a company that is disrupting itself from the inside. Madzonga loves working with dynamic teams using innovation and technology to disrupt business models and is currently in love with the integrated value ecosystem space.
Youth Action: Luzuko Tena, Social Media Manager, MediaCom
Born in Gqeberha, Luzuko Tena is an advocate for youth, education and diversity, equity and inclusion, in addition to being the social media manager for Mediacom South Africa. His career, which has seen him work with major brands and agencies such as Ogilvy Social Lab, GetSmarter(2U) and Pernod Ricard, to name a few, has exposed him to the diverse ecosystem and extent of digital marketing. In 2021, Tena celebrated many milestones, including being on the panel at numerous industry events and winning the 2021 Bookmarks Black Pixel for Best Contribution to Transformation in the Digital Industry.
Special Distinctions: Ryan McManus, Creative Director, VMLY&R South Africa
Ryan McManus brings a wealth of global experience and a clear purpose to projects, having traveled and worked for some of the world’s leading agencies. As well as leading VML South Africa’s growth trajectory in the creative space, McManus has been listed in the Courier and Custodian Top 200 South Africans, has been a guest speaker at Cannes Lions and Adobe conferences, and had the privilege of judging Cannes YDA, Loeries, Bookmarks, New York Festival, AdPrint and ADC.
This year’s Bookmark Awards will be led by new judging chair, Khensani Nobanda, who says: “Winning an IAB SA Bookmark Award is not just a recognition of excellence, but a showcase of the talents that the ‘South Africa holds in this fledgling industry.
“Bookmarks are more than amazing digital work; it also plays a vital role in encouraging innovation and catapulting the industry to think about the next best way to execute and deliver for maximum impact.
In an ever-changing post-pandemic world, digital has become even more important and The Bookmarks aims to go beyond rewarding great work. “This year, our goal is for The Bookmarks to become even more relevant by taking on the key priorities enshrined in the IAB’s mandate, including educating and inspiring businesses in the sector,” concludes Razia Pillay, Chief Executive Officer of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB)
